"The Language in Space - I - Abbé de l´Epée"
"The Language in Space" is a play written by Herbert Gantschacher about the development of the Sign Language of the Deaf. The videoclip "Abbé de l´Epée" (performed by the deaf actors Werner Mössler as Abbé and Reinhard Grobbauer as the deaf streetkid) shows the beginning of the Sign Language of the deaf in Europe. Abbé de l´Epée was a priest in France in the time of King Ludwig XIV in the 18th century. The scene shows the legendary meeting of Abbé de l´Epée with a young deaf streetkid in France. Abbé started teaching the young deaf man. He understood, that the young deaf man could not speak. But Abbé understood also, that the young deaf man has all possibilities for communication. So Abbé started talking with him in sign language und teached him sign language. As the young deaf man Abbé teached the meaning of signs. The young deaf man was not longer an outlaw living on the street. The legend told us, that the deaf young man was a son of the king. Abbé would or could not know, that the sign language of the deaf is a normal language with a structure and grammar like other languages. But Abbé learned that fact by experience.
