"Brundibár" - Austrian Premiere - Feature
    This is a feature about the children´s opera "Brundibár" and the Austrian Premiere produced by ARBOS-Company for Music and Theatre as a memory- and schoolproject with survivors of the Holocaust as Herbert Thomas Mandl and Eva Herrmannová. As a young girl Herrmannnová herself sung in the choir of production in the concentration camp of Theresienstadt/Terezín in 1943-1944. In Theresienstadt a lot of cultural activities happened on the initiative of the imprisoned artists and scientist, but it was misused by the Nazis for their propaganda. The composer Hans Krása (he served in World War I as a soldier in the Austro-Hungarian Army as the composer Ullmann and other prisonders of Theresienstadt) was deported from Prague to Theresienstadt and rewrote his children´s opera "Brundibár" in the concentration camp. It was performed 59 times there: From of 15.000 children of Theresienstadt only around 100 survived. The story of the opera is simple: with the help of the animals two children can buy milk for their sick mother. The journalist Coschka Hetzer wrote about the Austrian Premiere of the opera 52 years later: "Now girls and boys of the Gymnasium Tanzenberg performed this opera in Klagenfurt on a simple stage (Erich Heyduck) directed by Herbert Gantschacher. They sing and perform with their natural beauty and musical talent. The music is performed by the ensemble kreatib conducted by Jürgen Wirrmann in the Theresienstadt version. Today the children enjoy the melodies of the music. The composer was sent to Auschwitz and murdererd there, the librettist survived, because he could flee to London before World War II started". About the concept of the performance the director Herbert Gantschacher and the poet Dževad Karahasan wrote: „A reason of motivation is necessary, to show the opera ‘Brundibár’ as an imitation of the reality. Nobody wanted to give money to the children voluntarily. But why should be punished only the poor Brundibár? We understand that the theatre is an imitation of the reality. We accept also that in reality always victims are fighting against victims. The arts are not the reality but an imitation of the reality. The reality could arrange fights without any motivation. In the field of the arts it is not allowed to make something without any motivation.“
